DONE DEAL JUST IN: Chicago Bears blockbuster trade another $40 Million Wide Receiver in Free Agency

Though it’s still early in the season, teams are already eyeing potential prospects for next year’s free agency. For the Chicago Bears, NFL analysts are predicting a pursuit of San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward.

Ward, who will turn 29 in May, is expected to be the top cornerback available in the 2025 free agency. A standout performer for the 49ers, he’s exceeded the value of the three-year, $40.5 million contract he signed in 2022. Last season, he led the league with 23 passes defended, grabbed five interceptions, made 72 tackles, and held opposing quarterbacks to a 64.5 passer rating.

As a defensive leader on the NFC champion 49ers, Ward’s reliability and ability to perform under pressure make him an attractive free-agent target. While adjusting to a new defensive coordinator could impact his future, if he remains healthy, he’s expected to secure a major deal.

With several top-tier cornerbacks expected to hit the market, Ward’s value is projected to be significant. He could potentially surpass the $20.3 million annual salary earned by A.J. Terrell, putting him among the highest-paid at his position. How Ward performs throughout the 2024 season will be key in determining his free agency trajectory.

NFL Analysis Projects Charvarius Ward to be Pursued by Chicago Bears in Free Agency

Charvarius Ward is expected to be a highly sought-after name in next year’s free agency, with a report from Bleacher Report suggesting the Chicago Bears should target the 49ers star.

“While Tyrique Stevenson hasn’t been a poor performer this season, he’s been relatively average. According to Pro Football Focus, the second-year player has allowed a nearly 60 percent completion rate (17 of 29) when targeted and earned a 62.3 coverage grade through the Bears’ first four games.”

The Bears are projected to have around $73 million in cap space for the offseason, per Over The Cap, giving them the financial flexibility to pursue top-tier talent. Adding Ward alongside Jaylon Johnson could create one of the best cornerback duos in the league, making completions tough to come by. Ward has defended 67 career passes, including four in just the first four weeks of the 2024 season.

Meanwhile, the 49ers could face a tough decision with Ward approaching free agency. With quarterback Brock Purdy’s expected salary increase, retaining key players like Ward may become difficult. The Bears, armed with significant cap space and a promising roster led by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, are well-positioned to make a competitive offer for Ward, intensifying the pressure on the 49ers to balance their salary cap and secure a strong playoff push.
