Sad News: Bengals set to cut ties with $24M veteran Defender expected to leave Cincinnati for AFC team
The Cincinnati Bengals face a pivotal offseason, and defense is their biggest concern. After a rough 2024 campaign, the unit needs reinforcements. But before they look to free agency for fresh talent, the Bengals must decide which of their own defensive free agents to retain. One name that stands out is veteran cornerback Mike Hilton, who has been a key piece of Cincinnati’s secondary for the past four years.
Mike Hilton’s uncertain future in Cincinnati
Despite his leadership and experience, Hilton is coming off one of his least impressive seasons since joining the Bengals. He allowed a 67.2% completion rate, the second-worst of his tenure along with a 92.0 passer rating when targeted. With his 31st birthday approaching, concerns about potential decline are justified.

That said, Hilton’s value remains evident in crucial areas. He earned a solid 68.5 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus, while his 91.7 run defense grade was the best among all NFL cornerbacks. His instincts and physicality still make him an intriguing free-agent option despite a down year.
One team showing interest is the Jacksonville Jaguars. ESPN’s Aaron Schatz sees Jacksonville as a strong candidate to sign Hilton, citing his versatility and defensive impact.
“Hilton has always been special as a playmaker in the slot. He can play coverage, defend the run and blitz. For example, he made his average run tackle after a gain of just 2.6 yards this past season, the best figure for any cornerback with at least 20 run tackles. In addition, 17 of his 35 tackles after a pass reception stopped the receiver short of a successful gain; only Dru Phillips had a better rate among cornerbacks. Hilton would be a useful playmaker to move around in Anthony Campanile’s new defense.” (Via: Sporting News)
Can Jacksonville afford Hilton?
For a Jaguars defense that surrendered the most passing yards per game last season, Hilton’s experience and skill set could be a game-changer. However, the financial aspect remains a question mark. Spotrac projects Hilton to land a three-year, $37 million deal in free agency. Given his age, recent performance, and the fact that his last contract (four years, $24 million) was significantly lower, that projection seems ambitious.
