Breaking News: Miami loses 5-star Outcast to Oklahoma State football

The safety position already was among the most impacted groups by Oklahoma State’s transfer portal additions, and it got another boost Thursday.

Former Miami safety Zaquan Patterson, who appeared in all 13 games for the Hurricanes as a true freshman last fall, committed to the Cowboys, according to multiple reports.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Patterson finished his freshman year with 19 tackles and three pass breakups, seeing his role grow as the season went on. His most productive game was the Pop Tarts Bowl, where he had five tackles against Iowa State.

Coming out of Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Florida, Patterson was a four-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite rankings, though he was a five-star on Rivals.

Patterson is the third defensive back added to the spring portal class, all coming from the East Coast. He joins North Carolina transfer DeAndre Boykins and East Carolina transfer Eric Fletcher, both cornerbacks.

STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State football program became active in the transfer portal early in the month of April, adding to its heavily rebuilt roster.

The Cowboys have undergone massive offseason changes with a mostly new coaching staff and more than 30 new players — a number that is growing this spring.

Here’s a look at the transfer portal movement in the spring window for OSU:

Cam Abshire, WR (Emory & Henry)

A 6-foot-4, 185-pound receiver who posted over 1,600 yards in his first two seasons of college ball, Abshire will try to make the jump from Division II Emory & Henry University, located in Emory, Virginia. He is coming off a redshirt sophomore season of 1,054 yards and 13 touchdowns on 51 catches for the Wasps. Abshire brings needed height to a rebuilt receiver group that has few players over 6-foot-2.

Banks Bowen, quarterback (Tulsa)

Still a true freshman, the 6-foot-3, 208-pound Bowen is a three-star recruit who enrolled at Tulsa in January, but went in the transfer portal on the final day of the spring window, April 25. He committed to the Cowboys three days later. Originally from Lawrence, Kansas, Bowen played for his father — longtime college assistant Clint Bowen, who is now an OSU analyst — at Lawrence High. A three-star recruit, Bowen threw for 4,144 yards and rushed for 2,109 with 63 total touchdowns over his high school career.

DeAndre Boykins, cornerback (North Carolina)

The first defensive back added to the roster in the spring period, Boykins appeared in 10 games as a backup at North Carolina last season. The 6-foot, 200-pound cornerback started all 14 of the Tar Heels’ games as a true sophomore in 2022, then missed the following season with an injury. He will be a redshirt senior in the fall.

Freddie Brock, RB (Georgia State)

A graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining, Brock rushed for 819 yards and eight touchdowns last season at Georgia State. He adds immediate depth and experience to a running back group that will be seeking a lead back in the fall. Brock began his career at Maine and transferred to Georgia State in 2023, where he averaged 6.2 yards per carry over 16 games in two seasons.

Grayson Brousseau, tight end (Utah State)

A disciple of new OSU tight ends coach DJ Tialavea at Utah State last season, Brousseau joins the Cowboys ahead of his redshirt freshman season. Originally from Lehi High School in Utah, Brousseau had 612 yards and eight touchdowns on 46 receptions as a senior. He appeared in four games last year at Utah State while redshirting.

Terrill Davis, receiver (Central Oklahoma)

A Division II All-American at UCO last fall, Davis had 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns on 109 catches as a redshirt junior for the Bronchos. Originally from Choctaw, the 6-foot, 180-pound Davis only began playing football in his senior year of high school in 2020. He was regarded as a top transfer prospect from the Division II level by multiple ranking services.

Christian Fitzpatrick, WR (Marshall)

Just days after Abshire’s commitment, the Cowboys added more height to the receiver depth chart with the 6-foot-4, 217-pound wideout from Marshall. Fitzpatrick has one year of eligibility remaining, after beginning his career in 2020 at Louisville. He spent 2021-23 at Michigan State before transferring to Marshall, where he had the best season of his career last fall. He started all 13 games, catching 34 passes for 576 yards and six touchdowns. Fitzpatrick has one year of eligibility remaining.

Eric Fletcher, cornerback (East Carolina)

Diving into their past connections once again, OSU added Fletcher, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound cornerback who played for new OSU assistant Jules Montinar at East Carolina. Fletcher was a three-star recruit from Fort Myers, Florida in the 2024 class and appeared in three games while redshirting for the Pirates last fall.

Wendell Gregory, edge rusher (South Carolina)

A high school linebacker in Marietta, Georgia, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound Gregory moved to edge rusher and played in two games as a true freshman while redshirting at South Carolina last season. He could fit well into the outside linebacker role in the defense of OSU’s new coordinator, Todd Grantham.

Taje McCoy, edge rusher (Colorado)

The former Putnam City High School star spent two seasons at Colorado, finishing with 23 tackles and four sacks as a redshirt freshman last fall. At 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, McCoy adds another talented, young edge rusher to the Cowboys’ spring transfer portal haul. The Oklahoman’s 2022 All-State Defensive Player of the Year, McCoy considered the Cowboys among his finalists before signing with Colorado.

Zaquan Patterson, safety (Miami)

A 6-foot, 195-pound safety originally from Hollywood, Florida, Patterson appeared in all 13 games as a true freshman for the Hurricanes last fall. He started one game and finished the year with 19 tackles and three pass breakups. His best game came in the Pop Tarts Bowl, finishing with five tackles against Iowa State. Patterson was a four-star prospect on the 247Sports composite rankings, though he was rated as a five-star by Rivals.

Markell Samuel, OL (Appalachian State)

Samuel adds a bit of veteran experience to a somewhat untested offensive line. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound super-senior began his career as a defensive lineman in 2020, but moved to offensive tackle the following season. In 2023, he became the starting left tackle and remained there for all 11 games he appeared in last fall. He has played over 1,400 snaps in his career.
