Award watchlists, the subject of much off-season anticipation, will be made public this summer. Over the course of two weeks between the end of July and the start of August, most of them will emerge. The Lott IMPACT Trophy, however, removes its watchlist ahead of schedule.

The only significant college football honour that takes character into account is the Lott IMPACT Trophy. The Lott Trophy, named for former NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, is awarded to the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year each year. It is in honour of the player who has influenced his team the most, both on and off the pitch. Integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community, and tenacity are all qualities that make up IMPACT.

Last year, three Ohio State players landed on the prestigious watchlist. After two were drafted, one remains, and one other was added. If either Buckeye can take home the award, they would be Ohio State’s second winner, joining James Laurinaitis (2008).

There’s More Where That Came From

Most of the defence must be replaced by the current national champions. But the top defensive player from the previous season is back. Caleb Downs, as expected, landed on the Lott IMPACT Trophy watchlist after doing so previously to last year. Almost every preseason watchlist had him on it. The star safety ended up as a finalist for the Thorpe Award, Bednarik Award, and Lott IMPACT Award. In addition to being one of eight undisputed All-Americans, Downs is even more hyped than ever for the 2025 Heisman Trophy.
It would be difficult for him to win the Heisman as a safety, particularly since his counting statistics were lower than in 2023.
