The Cronulla Sharks have successfully secured the long-term future of star hooker Blayke Brailey, ending months of speculation and tension surrounding his contract status. Despite still having one year left on his current deal, Brailey was set to become one of the NRL’s most sought-after talents on the open market come November 1. However, after intense negotiations, both parties have now reached an agreement that will see the in-form No.9 remain in the Shire.

Contract talks between Brailey’s camp and the Sharks had reportedly stalled in recent weeks. His management pushed hard for a five-year extension, while the club was initially only willing to offer a three-year deal on top of his existing contract. The deadlock sparked interest from rival clubs, most notably the Perth expansion project, who were monitoring the situation closely and prepared to table a lucrative offer.

Brailey’s performances in 2025 have been nothing short of elite. The 25-year-old has arguably outplayed current Origin hookers Harry Grant and Reece Robson, with many pundits tipping him to become the next Blues No.9. Fox League’s James Hooper recently declared Cronulla’s delay in locking him down could prove costly, suggesting that allowing negotiations to drag on had risked losing one of the club’s most valuable assets.

Fortunately for Sharks fans, the saga has now ended in Cronulla’s favour.

While the exact terms of the new deal are yet to be publicly disclosed, sources indicate it is a long-term contract that satisfies Brailey’s desire for security and reflects his growing stature in the game. The extension is a major coup for Cronulla as they look to build their roster around a young and dynamic spine.

Brailey, who has come through the Sharks’ junior system and is regarded as a future club captain, expressed his relief and excitement in staying loyal to the team that gave him his NRL debut.

> “This club means everything to me. I grew up watching the Sharks, and to now be able to commit my future here is a dream come true. I love the boys, the fans, and what we’re building,” Brailey said.

The deal also sends a strong signal to rival clubs and potential suitors that Cronulla are serious about retaining their core talent as they continue to push for premiership contention.

With Brailey now secured, the Sharks can focus on consolidating their top-eight standing and shaping their long-term squad. And for Brailey, the road to State of Origin seems inevitable if he maintains his current form.
