Middlesbrough agree deal to sign extraordinary 24- year-old striker with double figure of goals last season

WITH Middlesbrough closing in on a deal for Kaly Sene, Tommy Conway has insisted he would welcome some additional attacking competition.

Boro officials have spent the weekend conducting discussions with Lausanne over Sene, with an agreement over the Senegalese 24-year-old now understood to be close.

Sene, who started his career in the youth ranks at Juventus, is keen to move to Teesside, with the Boro hierarchy hopeful he will be able to undergo a medical in the next couple of days.

Boro, who are also close to tying up a season-long loan deal for Newcastle United full-back Matt Targett, have seen their attacking options reduce in the last couple of windows with Emmanuel Latte Lath having moved to the United States in January and Josh Coburn having joined Millwall earlier this summer.

As things stand, Delano Burgzorg and Marcus Forss are the only alternatives to Conway, with the latter not even having featured in the matchday squad for Saturday’s win at Norwich City.

Conway scored Boro’s second goal in their 2-1 victory at Carrow Road, but the Scotsman accepts the need to strengthen the ranks in the final week of the transfer window.

“Whether I’m playing or not, I’ll always have an impact on or off the pitch,” said Conway. “At the end of the day, I’m a football player and of course I want to be playing and helping the team as much as possible. But if someone else comes in, then I only see that as good depth for the squad.

“We chat about it all the time, us and the lads, we think we’ve got a good squad on our hands. If we can keep everyone fit all season, then I think we’re going to have a good chance.

“And the more quality we have in the squad, then the more benefit it’s going to have for us. Hopefully, bodies can come in to help the squad, and hopefully we can continue to get better.”

Boro impressed for long periods of Saturday’s win at Norwich, with Conway’s strike on the stroke of half-time coming two minutes after Finn Azaz had broken the deadlock with a fiercely-struck shot.
